You guessed it…anesthetic!

Attempts to lessen pain during surgery have been varied since records began. As early as 4000 BC we know that poppy seed was used to lessen pain, whilst acupuncture was favoured in China in 1600 BC and by 600 BC,  cannabis was commonly used in India.

But widely accepted as that the founder of modern anesthesia, is William T.G. Morton. A Boston Dentist, Dr. Morton had been in the search for a better agent than what had been used by many dentists to date: nitrous oxide. Dr. Morton and a renowned surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, John Collins Warren made history in 1846 with the first successful surgical procedure performed with anesthesia. Dr. Morton had shown the world that when ether is inhaled as a gas, in the proper dose, it provided safe and effective anesthesia.

Throughout the 20th century, the safety and efficacy of general anesthesia has dramatically improved with the routine use of tracheal intubation, developments in airway management techniques, standardized training for anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists and developments in pharmacology and chemistry.
