TRAC Supports Local STEM Event

29th March 2011

TRAC’s Regulatory Executive, Shilpa Jain, visited Penair School in Truro, Cornwall to speak to local pupils about “Where Medicines Come From” as part of a recent event organised and sponsored by Penair School, The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership (CL EBP).

Pupils aged between 9-14 years from schools across the county attended The Chemistry at Work exhibition on Friday 18th March, designed to provide pupils with ideas and examples of how chemistry is used in every day work.

TRAC was one of seven exhibitors at the day event which also included STEMNET; an organisation which encourages young people to have a positive attitude towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects and careers.

Throughout the day Shilpa gave short presentations about how medicines are made before giving younger students flash cards to arrange into the various stages of drug development. Older pupils tried their hand at making the Aspirin molecule using a ball and stick model.  “The topic tied in well with what we do at TRAC, it was great to see the pupils enjoy learning about it” said Shilpa.

TRAC’s Company Director, Sarah Trethowan said “TRAC are delighted to help support this project, it’s important for businesses to engage with students and promote the opportunities available within science-based industries particularly within the county.”
