TRAC Treks into Spring
27th June 2012
After receiving the Healthy Workplace Silver Award at the start of the year, the TRAC team has been building on its achievements throughout May with a number of healthy initiatives which included the Walk to Work Week Challenge, a charity 12-mile walk for Macmillan, Cook Well Be Well Challenge and the Cornwall Beach Games.
TRAC’s trekking started with the Walk to Work Week Challenge between the 14th and 18th May. Individuals were tasked with walking 12 miles each over the course of the week (the average distance employees travel each day to get to work). The team wore pedometers and logged their steps each day as part of a National challenge.
Overall TRAC walked 179 miles (358,000 steps) and burnt a combined 17,000 calories which is equivalent to 32 muffins placing them 7th in the national challenge (and 1st at a local level).
The trekking continued on Sunday 20th May when 6 members of the TRAC team donned their walking boots and raised over £650 for Macmillan. Leaving the office behind and heading out to the local countryside the team, including TRAC’s directors, took part in the organised St Michaels Way Walk on a twelve mile route that took them from coast to coast.
Leaving the countryside for the beach, the team then embraced the Olympic spirit to compete in the 2012 Cornwall Beach Games on 25th May at Tolcarne Beach, Newquay.
250 people created 20 teams from 23 companies to take part in 6 activities which included volleyball, football and handball before a surf board paddle relay, sand sculpture competition and a team test of strength in the final tug ‘o’ war event.
The games were organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, The NHS Healthy Workplace Programme and Cornwall College to have fun and encourage healthy participation and team building with work colleagues.
Finally a tasty challenge ended the month when 4 of the team participated in the Cook Well Be Well Challenge aimed at employees from companies across Cornwall.
The team was tasked to design a healthy balanced two-course meal to feed four people for under £10. Their menu needed to provide value-for-money, use local produce and be an inspiring family meal. Using professionals kitchens based in Camborne College, they had one and a half hours to prepare their menu for the judges.
The challenge was organised by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly’s Health Promotion Service in partnership with Roddas and Cornwall College.
“It’s great that we’ve had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of activities which is really helping us to embed the healthy workplace initiative into TRAC. It has created a real team spirit which has gained momentum and inspired plans for the team to get involved in other activities too.” said company director Sarah Trethowan.
